How Temu landed cost actually works

Temu lists prices in the buyer's local currency, but the goods are shipped from China and pass through customs on arrival. Depending on your country, you may pay duty, VAT/GST, or both — and the price you saw on the product page often does not include them.

The formula

subtotal_local   = (item price + shipping) × FX rate
duty = subtotal_local × duty rate (if subtotal > deMinimis)
VAT taxable base = subtotal_local + duty
VAT = VAT taxable base × VAT rate (most countries: always)
total landed     = subtotal_local + duty + VAT

Why your country matters

  • United States: Currently uses an $800 de minimis threshold for personal imports. Most Temu orders fall under it, so duty is often $0. This rule is under active review in 2026 — verify before assuming.
  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT applies to all imports since 2021. Duty waived under £135.
  • European Union: VAT applies to all imports under the IOSS regime. Duty waived under €150.
  • Australia: 10% GST on all imports since 2018. Duty waived under AUD 1,000.
  • Brazil: One of the most aggressive duty regimes globally — verify with current customs guidance.

Why the 2x matters here

A $20 Temu deal can land at $32 once customs and VAT are applied. That's a 60% jump, and it's the single biggest reason cross-border shoppers feel "scammed" — they weren't, the math just wasn't visible. Use this tool before you click Buy, not after.
